Road To Sasso
Dear Robert, dear team,
Going with the idea that we gradually take more and more responsibilities for ourselves, I attach the report of our last meeting made each day by a different member of the Circle.
I’d like just to spend few words about the flavour of this last step together of our “way to Sassoferrato”:
The process activated since the first of this group of three meetings, of moving our focus from “repertoire/performance-mode” to “Circulation/Division of Attention/Improvisation-mode”, brought us this time to deliberately let go of the idea to set up a performance; we just had a recording session the last night instead. Also, we experimented having a very simple and basic schedule (mainly pointing at the rise time, sitting and to the four meals), and, more generally speaking, having a less formal approach.
Discussions have been allowed, taking the risk that they might take over, in order to give shape to personal wishes for a possible future…
Report 05/02/10 – Roma (by Michele)
The usual rise at 7.00 a.m. and sitting 7.30 am; breakfast at 8.00. So we start with the first warm up of the weekend: Adriano lead cross picking exercises for right hand, Filippo left hand exercises (3 notes for any string – on 5th and 4th string – changed fingers).
Michele arrives in the morning and join at 10.20 am. We review the C maj scale: the first 3 octaves in the first positions. Isn’t so expected!
From 10.45 to 11.20 am we play the AAD developing variations: the n.1 counting bars (of 3, 5 and 7); the n.2 playing also displacements.
At 11.40 am we play the AAD D minor exercises: the “D-minor Theme” in particular. At the end we play many D minor circulations.
A wish lunch at 1.00 pm (Massimo kitchen coordinator, Roberto Deiana and Adriano in the kitchen).
Discussion about next possible future projects in the Italian circle: the wish to play and study music together needs an aim and a specific context. Maybe the “study group” form is a good context to developing our intentions. But we need to define our aims.
And a half hour (from 2.30 pm to 3.00 p.m.) silence time. Anyone have a rest to compensate the respective trips.
We reprise at 3.00 pm with another C harm minor circulations (and a review of the
Same scale) with rhythm remark (playing the 1st, 3rd, 5th note; playing the 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th note; playing the 1st, skip the 2nd and 3rd and playing the 4th).
A rich teatime at 4.30 pm.
Others open discussions about the possible future and the circulations: the question “we need to know scales to circulate?” generate a specific free speech about one’s property point of view concerning circulation practice. We realize the complexity and the hard commitment to a study group about circulations. We need to define some more our aim to put into concrete form.
Repertoire from 5.00 pm to 6.00.
A new piece by Adriano called “L’agguato”: Alessandro, Adriano, Filippo and Michele play it. The aim is to introduce this piece to the next OGC course.
All together play “Invocation”: arpeggios, bass line and solos. Massimo join playing the basic arpeggio.
From 6.15 pm to 7.00 pm we connected with AAD web site and work with new posted developing variation pattern.
Dinner at 7.00 pm (Massimo kitchen coordinator, Alessandro and Michele in the kitchen).
Reprise at 9.00 pm with free improvisation. The plaint of downstairs neighbours we bring to a quite free circulation, with a rule: everybody has to stop when notes play simultaneously…we test strong trouble about it (defect of attention and a lot of misunderstanding).
Sat. February 6, 2010. Roma (by Filippo)
Rise at 7ish, heavy rain and thunders. Adri & Fil for breakfast.
Sitting at 7:30; Breakfast at 8:10. Breakfast completion & Housework at 8:45. It has stopped raining already.
9:15 Warm-up with guitars. Left Hand calisthenics guided by Adri, beginning with open A, then several different patterns on strings A and E. Right Hand guided by Fil & Al, a pattern from ‘Neurotica’ (as figured out by Fil) and the first bar from ‘The Eye Of The Needle’ to practise little finger stretching.
Ear training: one person plays a C or G on first position, and the person on their right listens and re-plays the same note. One of us has still many difficulties with this exercise, and the others do the best they can to help.
10:35 Work on C major scale. Since we’re 7, we assign one note to each person and circulate the scale on 3 octaves. Then we circulate four-note chords: CEGB, DFAC and so on, first played simultaneously and then as arpeggios. When playing these chords and arpeggios, it is not always so easy to figure out when it’s our turn to play.
Circulation work. First, Circulation to the right plus 1; then, to the right w/return followed by to the left w/return. When circulating, the differences in skill between us seem to vanish, and we all suck more or less to the same extent.
12:15 Lunch preparation for some, and Personal Practice for others.
14:45 ‘Are You Abel?’. Yes we are!
15:30 We circulate displacements on an E pentatonic pattern presented at the current AAD course.
Tea and discussions until 18:05.
18:30 A Division Of Attention exercise: we play – one chord every 3/8 – the left hand warm-up exercise suggested by Leonardo and also presented at the current AAD course, Martin’s variation included, while counting 8 bars of 5/4. This is interesting, and honourably accomplished by most of us.
19:15 An early dinner, after a late lunch and a long tea. An afternoon of eating, interrupted by a bit of guitar playing…
20:45 A few takes on improvisation (somewhat recalling the first days at S.Cugat with the OCG), followed by thrakking on power chords, and a free circulation. In free circulation, two or more simultaneous notes are not a mistake; however, when this happens, we acknowledge it and remain silent for a short while before playing our next note. Following this instruction seems to be very hard for us.
We go on until 22:50.
Sunday 7th of February 2010, Rome (by Roberto Duse)
7:30 Morning Sitting
8:15 Breakfast (Filippo+myself)
9:00 – Warm Up
Leaded by Adriano (right hand) + Filippo (left + right hand)
Right Hand (metronome 92 bpm)
we begun playing on the 3rd string on bit 1 and 3 of 4/4…then Triplets…
1/4 – 1/4 triplets – 1/8 same string
we move playing 1/8 on 3rd and 2nd string,
then 2 times each string, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
After this we play eight times each string in triplets
and we go on playing 2 times x string, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
We moved to 1/16 playing 8 times each string and moving
backward to 7 times, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
we also played 1/8 on the 3rd string (4 times on the beat and 4 times upbeat)
then we moved and play on 3rd and 2nd string and then on 3rd, 2nd, 1st.
Left hand leaded by Filippo (76 bpm?)
Hammer On ascending 1>2, 3>4
Pull Off descending 4>3, 4>2, 4>1
Then we practice Leonardo Requjo’s AAD exercise
in 5/4 on a bit 100…120 bpm counting and tapping.
After this we was already time for the final meeting (10:30 AM)
We recognized that we have not a formal begin, so we had not an inaugural meeting for this weekend.
We also noticed that there was a conjunction with the previous meetings, a sort of continuum…
We go through these days and saw also that we had not a global schedule of the day but we fixed only the main spots
and we already be available to news.
We also mentioned 3 important aspects of these days:
I) the free circulation
II) the golden rule (when 2 o more notes are played simultaneously we let it go and we begin again)
III) the value of refrain to play or to rarefy notes in favour of listen.
11:00 – 11:30
Filippo, Adriano and myself left Deaina’s.
