(italian version below)
Bologna, Jan 16th 2008

10:40 – This time it’s the whole bunch: 8 of us (Paolo, Adriano, Aldo, Duse, Filippo, Deiana, Stefano e Al) ) under the station roof of the main hall in Bologna Central Train Station: It’s not snowing.

11:00 – Straight to the bus stop, after about ten minutes, we jump on bus n: 25

11:20 – After some hesitation and uncertainty we re-find our way and, following Cristina’s instructions who will be able to reach us only in the afternoon, get the key from the guy next door and soon afterwards we get in. The room this time is nice and warm, the outside temperature is not as rigid as last time, but also Cristina switched the heater on since last night.

8 chairs in a circle and we begin.

11:45 – We collect ourselves briefly, tune up and begin with the warm-up:

2° Primary:

I ask if anybody would like to lead this session, nobody turns up, I do it:

Alternate picking on 4th string

  • metronome set at 80 bpm

  • 4 notes, 4th triplets, (‘till here only downstrokes), 8 notes, 8th triplets
  • Then alternating 4 bars in 4 notes with 4 in 4th triplets focusing on:
    • Letting the motion happen and pivot in the wrist

    • Letting the whole arm being and remaining relaxed

    • Letting the strokes being equal (no accents, neither intentional nor unintentional)

    • Letting also the volume remaining constant specially in the transitions from the slow figure to the faster one.

  • Then alternating 4 bars in eight triplets and 4 in sixteen notes

  • Sixteen notes

  • Quintuplets (five notes every metronome beep)

  • Then alternating 4 bars in sixteen notes with 4 in quintuplets; the whole thing always with the same focus.

12:15 – 1° Primary:

I ask again for volunteers to lead the session and good old Robertone go for it.

He calls out four 4-finger-combinations to perform on all the strings up to the 12th fret, back and forth, 8 note first, then 8th triplets and eventually in 16th note, one combination after another:

1-2-4-3, 2-1-3-4, 3-1-2-4, 4-2-1-3.

  • Metronome set at 88 bpm

12:45 – C Major scale

Filippo first, then Adriano and me in the end, showed our own exercises to deepen and develop our competence of the scale and bring it into the hand (the exercises have later been sent to everybody in different formats).

I use the 7 people for a “living demonstration” of C Major scale, assigning in turns to each of them a note, covering 3 octaves.

13:45 – Lunch break. We find a take away pizza close to the rehearsal room with a bar just next to it, this allowed us to be ready to begin again in one hour.

14:45 – We open the chapter “Circulations”, more specifically with the “Free Form”; as our attempts take place in time, we manage to keep it going longer and longer, but, as a common feature, I noticed a certain rush or anxiety In playing the note; maybe we tended to overlap our own necessity to play a note, to the circulation’s necessity for the note to be played…

Then Basic Form, Basic Form plus one, Basic Form plus one wit return. At this point the request of continuous and stretched attention begins to create the first beneficial inner frictions.

After that we’ve been working quite some time on the Variegated Form – Left – 3 minus 1 – return – plus one: wow!

This kept us busy for a while, then:

16:00 – We moved to the repertoire; TEOTN as a first, we went through it few times polishing the different sections and the transitions. In the meanwhile Cristina arrived and sat to observe from outside the Circle. We then approached Punta Patri; only up to the “Epic” section. Briefly through Blockhead and Revive The World, the latter being a good candidate to become the light motive for the next future.

17: – We collect ourselves to complete our meeting, Paolo has the earliest train to catch. We greet each other then I give Cristina the last personal meeting before her L1. The others keep working in the Circle.

18:00 – When I’m back there’s only Adriano and Filippo left, we do a quick recap of the repertoire (present and future) for our trio.

19:00 – Cristina gives us a lift to the station.

  • metronomo a 80 bpm

1-2-4-3, 2-1-3-4, 3-1-2-4, 4-2-1-3.

  • metronomo a 88(?) bpm

12:45 – Scala di Do

Poi Basic form, Basic form plus one, Basic form plus one with return.
