Guitar Circle of Italy Meeting
“Demanding” is the key word to describe this weekend.
Got up early on Saturday in order to be able to do some shopping for the week, before leaving. Caught the bus at 9.00, 10.00 at the station, 14.50 at Rolo. By 4.00 we set our stuff, the beds and the rehearsal room. Then we met the guy responsible of the place; he gave us an introduction to the ideas behind the activity of the centre in bio-dynamic agriculture, then he took us to a quick tour to see all the different activities of the farm. The whole thing has been quite fascinating. We might disagree with those ideas, or be just sceptical about the whole package, but I felt close to this people and the effort they make to bring quality into the field of their competence.
We had a short meeting to sort out money matters and the group decided to pay for my food and my accommodation: this is a symbolic act states my responsibilities towards this group.
We began to work around 6.00 p.m., I introduced the arpeggio part from “Big Dough Dance” (an ESC piece in 7/8) as a circulation (although Marziano and Fabio M. couldn’t come, we were still seven since Antonio and Fabio P. were there for the first time). We dedicated the rest of the evening, before and after dinner, to review Tony’s long term exercise (showing it to the new ones for the first time), and to go through the parts of the pieces we wish to learn and play, the preparation exercise for “Hope was also introduced by Antonio; then we even had a jam…
Off to bed after midnight but it was impossible to sleep because one of us was snoring heavily; after having tried several things, in a last desperate impulse to survive, around 3.45 a.m. Roberto D. and I moved our beds to the rehearsal room, so we got three good hours of sleep.
Sitting, breakfast, then some solid right hand work: I’m using a lot of Tony’s “systematic” exercises…
A short break and then a long session circulating in A harmonic minor, where I experienced a lack of presence of two different kinds: firstly it was due to some egos standing in the way, then the gas was just over.
At that point we clearly felt an earthquake.
Just before lunch Aldo, Filippo and Roberto D. had a personal meeting with me just to address some specific spots.
I really hope this bunch of people (myself included) will make the leap into whatever is our next stage…
After lunch we went in the garden for some “stepping and clapping” exercises (again Tony!): this stuff shows clearly how our body responds to rhythm and I feel this kind of work can be very powerful.
Again a short break then we used the last session to recap what we did and set the work to do for the next month.
We left the place to go to the train station and at 6.30 p.m. the 2 other Romans and I began our 5 hours trip back to Roma.
